My daughters (Grace 9 and Lilly 7) are now playing AMAZING netball. But their first season was a disaster.

Playing netball was supposed to be healthy and fun. Unfortunately the experience was exactly the opposite.

Like many other parents, I saw my girls struggle with learning netball. Game day was an unhappy day. My girls were not enjoying the game because they lacked the basic skills and confidence to play well.

4. Other sports like dancing, gymnastics and soccer tend to be abandoned by girls as soon as they become teenagers.

I knew that if my girls could learn netball basics, that they would play well, have fun, enjoy the game and their confidence would rise.

I started researching netball drills and training exercises for young girls. And for about 10 minutes every day I have been practicing with both of my daughters. ItÂ’s fun and a great opportunity to spend quality time together.

It was amazing how quickly their skills developed. Their confidence grew and their passion and motivation to play netball is now sky high.

• Grace (only 9 years old) scored 21 goals in one quarter.
• Lilly (7 years) just won the trophy for most improved netballer.

Many other parents noticed the transformation in my daughter’s netball skills. Several people wanted to know “How did I do it?”

When I would explain the fun training drills that we did for 10 minutes each morning before school, and the simple incentives that made my daughters love to do the exercise, other parents insisted I should write it in a book.

  But each girl on your netball team needs individual attention and support. Each girl will need to work on different skills. If you donÂ’t create customised training programs for each individual then the basic skills can take years instead of months to develop. Even your best players under pressure will show you their weaknesses. Some may need work on their passes, or catching, or foot work, or fitness, or confidence, or shooting, or re-bounding. The great news is that once you have identified a problem, you are half way to solving it.
• Tip 5. We know you are coaching for love!
  But the kids still deserve to get great coaching. The first few years that a young girl plays netball will either turn her onto the game or it will turn her off netball.
