Imagine having your friends and family being impressed at how quickly both of you managed to reconcile your differences.
The majority of husbands and wives we've seen haven't had any luck using common "marriage saving techniques" in solving their marriage problems. We will start with a couple who was a client of our practice two years ago. The couple married in their freshmen year of college and had a good relationship until they were in their late twenties. Larry: Sorry I came home late, I had to work late today.
Sally: You always come home late. Cook your own dinner.

Larry: Honey, I really didn't mean to do this. I will change for you and do what you want. I truly love you and I want our marriage to work
Larry does the most common thing any man would do. He declares his love for his wife because he thought this was what she wanted to hear. But, in fact, this was not what she really needed. In times like this she does not want to argue with her husband or be reassured by his continual lies or promises. Unfortunately, his common strategy does not work.
What does work?
Here is an example of a couple who lived thru a long and successful marriage for over 50 years.

Alan and Sarah have been married for over 50 years, but they are no different than any other couple; they constantly get into arguments and disagreements. For example, Alan wants to watch a football game, but Sarah wants Alan to spend time with her shopping. Yet, even though there are disagreements, they have managed to happily live with each other over these disagreements, reconciling their differences, permitting them to live happily together. The couple never even attempted to file a divorce. They always figure a resolution to their problems. They know how to work around their differences.
Alan always comes home late from work, but Sarah accepts that. Sarah works in the computer industry where majority of the employees are male and they offer to have business meetings with her from time-to-time. She eats out with them more often than she eats out with her husband even after work. But Alan never minds. What could keep them together? All of their peers and initially we wondered.
Unlike most couples, they have a connection that links them together during all times. They figure the secrets of keeping their marriage successful. They have what keeps most marriages alive, while other couples are seeking for them.
