I almost gave up ... I was trying to figure out a way that I could order in some takeaway from my local Italian restaurant and add a few touches to make it special (what a cheat ;o) ... when something caught my eye in a local bookstore. I had had been frantically searching the internet and bookstores for days, but now I had found something interesting ... an old manuscript written more than five hundred years ago by an anonymous Italian cook.
I purchased the book and devoured the manuscript as though it were food itself. Not only did I need the information it contained but I found it totally fascinating. This was no ordinary book. I had stumbled across an ancient text that outlined a unique and simple way to prepare and cook beautiful Italian food.
"I knew there had to be an easier way to learn Italian Cooking"
Many non-Italians identify Italian cooking with its popular dishes such as spaghetti or pizza. They even suggest that all the food is very much alike. Nothing could be further from the truth. You only need to travel a few miles between towns and villages in Italy to notice the differences in eating styles, not to mention the way the food is actually cooked. Every town has a distinctive way of making cheese, bread, wine and sausage and there must be thousands of differnt ways to create the perfect pasta and pasta sauce! This fantastic manuscript taught me so many authentic ways to cook that after experimenting all day long I was starting to feel that I'd always cooked this way.
What I needed now was a test!
Sarah rang around a few friends and asked them over for dinner that evening whilst I ran around some local stores and supermarkets gathering the ingredients I needed.
That night, before sitting down to eat, one of our guests asked what was on the menu. When I explained that I was in the middle of cooking authentic Italian food from recipes prepared in the fifteenth century they all started laughing and making comments about a pizza being delivered. Of course ... they were only joking but you should have seen their faces when I placed the meal before them ... It was a real sight, I can tell you.
Throughout the meal the compliments flew around the table and it was obvious that every single one of the eight guests thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food. We ate several different dishes that I had prepared and complimented the food with a superb bottle of 'Barolo'.
All that now remained was to decide which dish I should prepare for Sarah's big evening ...
The big night arrived and I could tell Sarah was nervous. She needn't have been. The meal was a huge success. Her boss and his wife really enjoyed every course and we all had a great evening. Sarah was successful with her proposal and her boss dropped regular hints about being invited around again for dinner.
Since then, if we invite friends or business associates to dinner or have a special occaision to celibrate I pull out my special book and cook up a real tasty authentic treat. And the good news is ...
