On the first Monday of the month of April, 1625, the market town of Meung, in which the author of ROMANCE OF THE ROSE was born, appeared to be in as perfect a state of revolution as if the Huguenots had just made a second La Rochelle of it. Many citizens, seeing the women flying toward the High Street, leaving their children crying at the open doors, hastened to don the cuirass, and supporting their somewhat uncertain courage with a musket or a partisan, directed their steps toward the hostelry of the Jolly Miller, before which was gathered, increasing every minute, a compact group, vociferous and full of curiosity.
In those times panics were common, and few days passed without some city or other registering in its archives an event of this kind. There were nobles, who made war against each other; there was the king, who made war against the cardinal; there was Spain, which made war against the king. Then, in addition to these concealed or public, secret or open wars, there were robbers, mendicants, Huguenots, wolves, and scoundrels, who made war upon everybody. The citizens always took up arms readily against thieves, wolves or scoundrels, often against nobles or Huguenots, sometimes against the king, but never against cardinal or Spain. It resulted, then, from this habit that on the said first Monday of April, 1625, the citizens, on hearing the clamor, and seeing neither the red-and-yellow standard nor the livery

LIGHT WEIGHT CAMPING EQUIPMENT and how to make it

Watching a large and enthusiastic man and his family unload their gear from the car on a recent camping trip, we became more and more fascinated trying to guess what their plans might be. They seemed to be a family on vacation at a fairly remote lake in the Rockies, but the longer we watched the less sure we were. We weren't at all sure they weren't on a practice run for a projected African safari. The man and his wife, both strong looking, pulled and tugged until they finally had a tent spread on the ground. Three strapping children staggered under the weight of rolls that could be sleeping bags, somewhat disguised. The heap on the ground grew with cartons of canned foods, assorted hardware, clothing, ropes, packs-we finally lost track. Long after dark we could still hear these intrepid campers trying to get their tent secured and their gear stowed away.
We left camp the next morning with four days' supplies on our backs and astonishment on the faces of our neighbors. They were as securely attached to their camp as if they had been nailed into position.
Repetitions of this scene have convinced us that there are many people who would like to know how to go light. Some people, of course, want to set up a home away from home and relax without ever stirring, but many others, like our neighbors, just don't have any idea how to go light.

This ebook deals with small game hunting, a sport which makes a direct contribution to big game hunting skills. The relationship between big and small game hunting is seldom stressed, and when it is stressed, it is seldom that tech-niques are examined in detail to show how small game hunting improves big game hunting skills. One cannot be a mediocre squirrel hunter, and at the same time a skillful deer hunter. The two techniques go together.

Of course, small game hunting is an end within itself. There is no more satisfying hunting than taking squirrel in the autumn hardwoods, cottontail rabbit when the first frost touches the upland pastures with its magic, ruffed grouse in heavy cover and raccoon along the river bottoms and swamps. Truly, one could spend a lifetime in the small game coverts, finding the game always worthy of the best hunting skills. They are our best teachers of woodcraft, rifles and shotgun field techniques.

Rifles, handguns and shotguns considered in this ebook are those which I have found well qualified for small game hunting by personal use. I have followed common hunter word usage in calling all auto-loading firearms "automatics."

The fulfillment of a childhood promise leads to the shocking discovery of a friend's death and likelihood of his having been murdered. Haunting memories and compulsion cloud our hero's mind and eventually drive him headlong into an obsessive search for the truth. He leaves medical school and moves to the rural Pennsylvania coal town where the body was found in an attempt to ferret out the killer and exact retribution.

The town itself is largely a collection of hillbilly riffraff and their kin. The local watering hole is called The Miner's Shaft and is the hangout for those he suspects as being involved with the murder. At The Shaft he meets Sally. She is the bartender and although a native of the town, her views are diametrically opposed to the bigoted sentiments of the bar's patrons.

With Sally's help and good acting the protagonist cozies up and infiltrates the 'good old boys' at The Shaft.

He soon is invited to go hunting with his new found 'friends' and after several nerve-racking expeditions he is asked to join the 'hunting club'.

Shortly thereafter he discovers the true nature of the 'hunting club.' It is a front for the "Defenders of Our Nation', a group of armed antigovernment radicals. It is an invitation he can't refuse!After attending several fiery rallies he joins the D.O.N.

Little does he know of the sinister mission in which he will participate. Can he escape involvement? Does he ever answer the questions

A short story about a young man that seeks adventure in the exciting times of the era 1861-1865.  A young man named Seth discovers that life in the civil war years can be full of dangerous people.  The war did bring out the worst behavior and then otherwise the best in most folks depending on the situation and Seth did experience alot of both extremities.  

These were times when men were hard like the earth that they lived upon, and strangers could be extremely strange at times especially for a young man to percieve the actions of others and then rationalize his own experience.  Gold miners roamed the countryside looking for fortune while American Indian tribes struggled against the growth of an ever expanding European civilization.  Alas, the lands of the North American continent was yet to be fully occupied and stragglers and the poor or even the criminal breed kept coming from the eastern shores to bring their ways into the new world.  Some good and then some not so good. 

In this afterlife adventure, young Grace Tiffen dies in a tragic car accident. She learns the afterlife is not so peaceful after all as she discovers everyone has vanished from the other side and God has gone into hiding.

The largest ship on the planet is like a city, with its own marina and aircraft landing strip the SeaCity is home to many thousands of passengers, their guests and the ship's crew. The luxury onboard lifestyle is threatened when Yuri Gregov demands millions of dollars, or he will sink the ship. He proves he has complete control of the ship by sending it on a crash course towards Gibraltar.
To thwart the extortionist the guest passenger, Ray Quade, embarks on an ever twisting tale of subterfuge, intrigue, climaxing with a chase by helicopter and fast speed boat. The end is always in doubt until the finale.
This novel is a sequel to Palm Island and includes a return for three of the main characters.
