| What is Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)? |
|
PAS---sometimes called Parental Alienation (PA)--- is a disorder that arises primarily in the context of child-custody disputes. Its primary manifestation is the child's campaign of denigration against a parent, a campaign that has no justification. It results primarily from the programming (brainwashing) of a child by one of the parents, whose goal is the complete vilification of the another parent. WHAT Makes PAS LOOK LIKE? ~ The child denigrates the alienated parent with foul language and severe oppositional behavior. ~ The child offers weak, absurd, or air-headed reasons for his or her anger. ~ The child is sure of him or herself and doesn't demonstrate ambivalence, i.e. love and hate for the alienated parent, only hate. ~ The child exhorts that he or she alone came up with ideas of denigration. The "independent- thinker" development is wherever the child asserts that no one told him to do this. ~ The child supports and feels a need to protect the antagonistic parent. ~ The child makes not demonstrate guilt over cruelty towards the alienated parent. ~ The child uses borrowed scenarios, or vividly describes situations that he or she could not have experienced. ~ Animus is spread to the friends and/or extended family of the alienated parent. ~ In severe cases of parent alienation, the child is utterly brain- washed against the alienated parent. The antagonistic parent can truthfully say that the child doesn't want to spend any time with the another parent. ~ Once told that the child MUST spend time with the another parent, the unpleasant person typically responds, "There isn't thing I can do simply about it. She/he simply doesn't want to be with you." |

"Four Strategies that can be effective when a child has been bribed or manipulated into turning against one of the parents" AN ACTUAL CASE FROM THE FILES OF Dr. Bricklin and Dr. Elliot are nationally-known child custody experts. [CLICK HERE FOR THEIR BIOGRAPHIES] One of the saddest situations happens once a child has been bribed or manipulated into turning against one of the parents--and often this parent is the better of the two parents. An actual case from our files illustrates what we are talking about. The daughter, a bright young girl of eleven, creates mayhem whenever her parent, a warm and hardworking professional, attempts to phone or pick her up for a visit. "You cognize I don't like to see you!" "I don't want to talk now. I'm busy." (The child slams the phone down.) "You're bothering us; don't call me!" (The parent, rightly, wonders who the "us" is in this statement.) And the parent often hears what is a sure sign of a bribed or manipulated child, words and sentences that are evidently not of the child's own creation, but rather from the bitter and vindictive another parent: "You distinct to leave us. This is all your fault. You're not entitled to share in my life anymore." Unfortunately, most mothers or fathers singled out to be the victims of such vitriolic attacks are poorly equipped to deal with them. They start out trying to be calm and loving, but all too shortly are worn down by the hurt, frustration and road blocks endlessly thrown up once they attempt contacts with the child. They end up either retreating, or counter-attacking---neither of which can lead to a happy outcome. If you are caught up in this kind of trap it is essential that you discover the four strategies that can be truly effective and helpful in this situation. |
