To understand what I have found, you have to understand what causes a urinary tract infection.

Urinary Tract Infection normally occurs once bacteria enter the opening of the urethra and multiply in the urinary tract. The urinary tract includes the two kidneys, ureters (tubes that carry piss from the kidneys to the bladder), the bladder itself, and the duct (the tube that carries piss from the bladder to the duct opening).

The infection can occur in several locations and the medical term for the infection varies by location.

Urethritis
Most bladder infections begin once bacterium originating in the bowels travel to and grow in the urethra. Infections limited to the duct are acknowledged as "urethritis."

Cystitis
once bacterium travel upriver to the bladder, the infection is called "cystitis."

Nephritis
Infections that reach the kidneys are acknowledged as "nephritis" or "pyelonephritis."
