Andrew Lang was born in Selkirk on March 31, 1844. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and at the Universities of St. Andrews and Glasgow, he also won a Snell Exhibition to Balliol College, Oxford. He graduated in 18868 and became a Fellow of Merton College, researching anthropology there until 1874. Lang went to London in 1875 and lived there for most of his life, spending his winters in St. Andrews in later years. He married Leonore Blanche Alleyne on April 17, 1875. He became one of the most popular journalists of his day by writing for the Daily News and for Longman's Magazine. His friends included Robert Louis Stevenson and W.E. Henley. As a critic he deplored the novels of Henry James and Thomas Hardy. He died on July 20, 1912.
