What is a Tight Foreskin?
The foreskin is a retractable double-layered fold of skin, that covers the glans (head of the penis), and protects it when the penis is not erect. It's attached to the glans with a frenulum - an elastic band of tissue. Typically the foreskin is free to move after it separates from the glans, usually by puberty (known as congenital phimosis).
A tight foreskin is where the foreskin cannot be fully retracted from the head of the penis - and there are varying degrees of this problem:
- Psychological - a psychological reason that leads on to a physical side effect. For example, a painful experience in the past of pulling back your foreskin, making you reluctant - even scared - to do the same again. As a result, the foreskin becomes tight.
- Acquired Phimosis - where the foreskin could previously be retracted, but no longer can; or can never be retracted, even after puberty.
- BXO - a localized skin condition distinguished by a whitish ring of hardened skin at the tip of the forekin, with white patches on the head of the penis.
- Frenulum Breve - where the frenulum is too short, restricting how far the foreskin can be retracted.
- Congenital Phimosis - where you are born with a tight foreskin, which typically cures itself by late puberty.
- Paraphimosis - where the foreskin is retracted, and gets stuck behind the glans, meaning it cannot be pulled back over the glans to its normal state.
A fully retractable foreskin occurs in less than 5% of infants, 50% of 10 year olds, 90% of 16 year olds and 98% of 18 year olds. This is perfectly normal, and not an indication for circumcision. Furthermore, the age at which foreskin becomes retractable varies for each child and should never, ever be forced.
If you are over 18, and suffer from one or more of the above conditions, circumcision isn't the only solution.
How a Tight Foreskin affected me - and how I cured it
A tight foreskin had devastating effects on me:
- Medically - a tight foreskin means you are unable to retract it and wash beneath your foreskin. This typically results in a build up of smega which, over time, can cause irritation or infection.
- Sexual Intercourse - the foreskin plays an important role, and is designed to move back behind the glans during sex. This heightens sexual experience. A tight foreskin makes this painful, or impossible, resulting in painful sex.
Both sexual intercourse and medical complications resulted in me having to see the doctor - who told me that circumcision was the only cure.
