Myth 2: Sit ups will and crunches will tone my stomach and build my "core"

THE TRUTH: Ab exercises such as crunches, sit-ups, and ab machines are actually the LEAST effective method of building the core. They do more harm than good.

Myth 3: Weight training or lifting weights will cause growth plate damage. I'm sure you've heard the talk that lifting weights will "stunt" growth.

THE TRUTH: Its amazing how much information taken out of context gets blown way out proportion!

Soccer Athletes who perform strength training or resistance training exercises with proper form, technique and progression develop stronger joints, improve stability, increase strength, power and speed.

Your child is more likely to get hurt "rough housing" with friends or playing the game itself.

Myth 4: Kids shouldn't weight train until they are 14 or 15.

THE TRUTH: Absolutely false. Most people think of body building when they think of weight training. A young boy or girl of the age of 8 may start a properly designed soccer resistance training program with significant benefits.

Myth 5: My child will become bulky and lose their flexibility and ability to move on the soccer field..

Youth Soccer Power Unleashed is the combined result of over 6 years of University and College study, over 20 years of clinical rehabilitation, on site emergency care for sprains, strains pulls and tears, program design and countless hours of reading books and watching DVD's of youth soccer and other soccer strength and conditioning books.

It started by accident in 1991 when I was a struggling second year Sheridan College student for Athletic Therapy and I was doing a clinical placement in Toronto. It just happened that my current course of program design required me to put together a sixteen week training program for any sport of choice.

As it happened one of my patients was a high school volley ball player and she was in for rehabilitation for a sprained ankle. She wanted to return stronger and more powerful to her team and asked me if could write a program for her. The coach noticed the difference and asked if I could write program for the entire team . I did and they were successful and she returned to play much stronger and more stable than before her injury.

So you're probably wondering how does this relate to soccer...

... the following year I ended up as the Senior Therapist and Conditioning Consultant for the Ontario Soccer Association. Over the next couple of years I was fortunate to implement soccer injury reduction and strength and conditioning strategies for seven youth soccer teams and was an integral part of three winning national championship teams. That was 15 years ago...

Zoom forward to 2000 when I became the Senior Therapist and Youth Conditioning Consultant for Bryst International inc. Player after player wanted soccer training programs to get them bigger stronger and faster so they could dominate on the soccer field and get identified for university scholarships.

Younger players want to get bigger and faster. They always want to be faster than their teammates.

I'm embarrassed to admit that...

...up until the year 2000 I was giving machine based exercises and long boring 30 to 40 minute "cardio" runs to many soccer players and they were getting bigger and stronger; however they were still were getting hamstring and quadriceps pulls and were still a little slow. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks....

give them exercises that closely resemble the actions of their body the way they perform in a game!

Out with: sit ups, hamstring curls, leg extension, seated leg press and universal bench press, and bicep curls.

Out with: days for isolated body parts (upper body Tuesday and Thursday, lower body Monday and Wednesday, Friday back).

Out with: long boring cardio runs

In Came: total body exercises

In Came: paired exercises

In Came: interval runs and sprints,

There were three noticeable benefits after the change in the fitness program:

1. Players were no longer getting pushed off the ball.

2. There was a quicker recovery time from sprints.
