With nothing better to do than visiting night clubs and selling his ideas for business at any available counter, he had been doing precisely that when he had come across Leena, a girl that he had taken to heart. This was not surprising considering the young fellow's penchant for falling in and out of love at the drop of a hat. Leena was quite like Twinkle, a girl that he had earlier met and fancied a lot. And there had been many other female friends, too, but none had been like Leena, not even the cat-eyed- girl that had come into his life for a while and blown his mind away. Leena and the narrator had met and been together for some time. They used to go out in the rain walking and talking, but the thing did not last for long. Leena came to know that he was fond of cat-eyed-girl, and perhaps this was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. He had not, of course, failed to make her one of his typical dream promises, but then, as it often happens, their lives had taken their respective courses. Was Leena uncertain about him? Did she think he was a philanderer? Anyway she went away to Hong Kong and then to America, and he joined a new job. It would appear as if the relationship had come to an end. But, if appearance is not reality, this story surely shows us why. The narrator cannot forget Leena, so when it rains again one fine day the next year, the symbolism of the ways of love and trust cannot escape him. He knows it is his love for Leena that drives him.
The story begins with dramatic descriptions of the narrator's fantastic business ideas. If it is not clones that he wants to sell to an acquaintance during a visit to the barber's, it is the airy products of his imagination that he tries to pawn off to someone else. Nothing really works out, though, and this sets him thinking about starting from scratch. A lot of brain-wracking goes into redefining priorities and setting brand new goals. And it is then that he meets Leena. The rest, as this diary of a book tells us, is not so much history as back to the future.
