London, New York, and above all Paris, each had dozens of venues where groups of alluring girl starlets, actresses, singers, ballerinas and variety performers - dressed in body stockings, or in fantastic sequined, feathery, sometimes revealing Art Nouveau or Art Deco glamour costumes - appeared on stage before Victorian and Edwardian audiences every evening.

Some of these pretty ladies, the beauty queens of their day, became stars whose legendary names are still familiar: the glamorous Mata Hari, Jane Avril, Gaby Deslys, Lili Damita, Josephine Baker... performing dances such as the French Cancan, or dressed as the veiled and seductive Salomé in belly dancing routines inspired by so-called Indian or Oriental dance. Routines that would inspire the musical productions of the early Hollywood cinema movie producers...
