When we get married, we often stroll into the courthouse, purchase a marriage license, and off we go to a short ceremony. We get married at a church, in a garden, at a home, or some other location. Everyone is excited, patting us on the back. We get the "congratulations," then we are shoved out the door to figure out how to do it, how to be married. And every other couple walking out the door will face divorce.

"Marriage is difficult," we tell ourselves. But marriage is NOT as difficult as we make it out to be. The problem is, we don't know what makes a marriage work, what the secret to a marriage really is.

Divorce Is Not The Answer,
And Therapy May Not Help!

People often ask me if I believe in divorce. My joking response is "yes, I've seen it. I believe in it." I just think it can, almost always, be avoided. I don't believe in saving abusive relationships. However, I think we too easily end marriages more often than not -- and for easily avoided reasons!

The statistics are quoted and known by everyone: nearly 1 in 2 marriages end in divorce. We've already established that. But that statistic doesn't change for couples who go to therapy. According to studies, almost 50% of couples in therapy end up divorced. Only 10 to 20% of couples who go to therapy see any significant help from counseling.

Imagine going to a doctor. He tells you that you need to undergo a procedure. The procedure itself has a 50% mortality rate. And if you survive, you only have a 10 to 20% chance of improvement. You tell me: would you go have the procedure? Yet couple after couple goes to marital therapy.

And the statistics for 2nd and 3rd (and 4th, 5th, 6th, etc.) marriages are dismal. The chance of staying married in a following marriage are MUCH lower than 50%. So, divorce doesn't solve anything.

Besides, divorces: rarely end a relationship (children keep you attached, like it or not), destroy finances (both in direct divorce costs -- average cost is $20,000, plus emotional costs and financial losses), undermine happiness, and have a negative impact on children.

So, divorce isn't the answer. Marital therapy likely won't help. And an unhappy marriage doesn't cut it. IS THERE AN ANSWER?
