It's a well-attested publishing phenomenon that the popularity of the horror novel goes in cycles, usually 5 to 7 yearly. Quite why this is so is unclear.
In my more whimsical moments I think perhaps it's to do with sunspots. :-)
Harlan Ellison has a more down-to-earth theory. He blames the publishing industry.
He believes that every now and then a good writer will come along (who just happens to write horror) who causes a resurgence of interest in the genre.
Then, (because publishers generally have no idea what makes a good horror novel) they print up lots of 'bad horror' to capitalize on that interest.
Trouble is - the public then gets conned into reading this 'bad horror' until they inevitably stop buying it...until another good writer comes along and rekindles the flame - and so the cycle continues.
Interesting theory.
Whatever the truth of it, horror has undoubtedly been out of favor for the last few years. And, if history is set to repeat itself (as it always does in publishing) I would hazard a guess that the good old horror novel is all set for a massive resurgence.
Indeed already, some of the best selling authors in the world (King, Koontz, Straub, Rice) write in this most noble of genres.
As well they might. It's long been a platform from where great and important issues can be confronted with sometimes surprising intelligence and subtlety.
Because, as any die-hard horror fan will tell you - myself included - good horror and dark fantasy is not about the gore and the shocks - it's about STORY.
I've wanted to run a course on writing a horror novel for some time now but I've held off. I guess I wanted to be able to do it justice.
However. Now is the time (and you'll find out why in a moment). I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to offer you this brand new 'Easy Way to Write' resource:
The Easy Way to Write: Introduction to Dark Fantasy and the Horror Novel.
I'm so excited because this is also my first collaboration on an EWTW e-course.
I'm honored to have this course co-presented by none other than the multi award winning, best-selling author of Blood Kiss and Cri de Coeur - M Kenyon Charboneaux - yes, a real bona fide successful horror writer!
For this very special, one of a kind e-course Kenyon and I have combined our love for the genre and been working together to bring you the definitive guide to writing your own horror novel over the next ten (yes, 10) weeks.
Not only that, Kenyon has graciously taken time out of her very busy schedule to personally coach every student on this e-course. This is an incredible and considerable bonus, almost unheard of on the Net.
Just look at what you will learn (and own!):
The Easy Way to Write: Introduction to Dark Fantasy and the Horror Novel.
On sign up: A thorough introduction to the genre, its history and importance, plus valuable tips on how to organize your time and writing space to maximum benefit - all from a professional, working novelist!
Then, over the following three weeks, important lessons on writing preparation, character analysis, plotting good horror and doing research, plus tips on setting and creating compelling 'creatures', convincing motivations and other crucial dark fantasy elements.
Then, in weeks 5 to 10, you'll learn how to go about actually writing your horror novel - how to pace, where to place observers and protagonists for maximum effect, how much blood and gore to use (or not use) and how to tap into pertinent issues like sex and death and the nature of good and evil.
And all the while you'll have a live Yahoo forum to discuss any issues you might have with your writing, the e-course, one to one with Kenyon or with any of your 'class-mates'.
As you can imagine, places on the e-course will be limited. As soon as the class reaches capacity, the doors will close and this course will be gone and the opportunity to work with a real live horror novelist will be gone forever.
