In 1987, long before the web came along, I stumbled on a mail-order ad offering a little booklet called VIP: The Complete Guide to Getting Backstage Passes. It was only about thirty dollars, so I took a gamble and bought it.
The author had discovered an (almost) foolproof way to beat the system and get "Special Access" passes to all kinds of events!
In the ad, he mentioned that had used this method to get:
Backstage passes to concerts
Front-row passes to sporting events
Tickets to the Academy Awards®
VIP passes to movie sets
Invitations to the White House
Of course, I had my doubts.
But when the book finally came, I read it all the way through... twice. I knew instantly that he really had figured it out!
The VERY FIRST time I tried it, I managed to get backstage passes to a Bon Jovi concert! (The top-left pass in the left margin.) I got to meet Jon Bon Jovi and the band members, and at the time, it was the coolest thing I'd ever done! (That was 1987, at the height of their popularity, and my girlfriend was suitably impressed!)
The next time I used it, I got a special sideline pass to a University of Kentucky basketball game, and I got to sit right on the floor! Twice, I got to throw the "out-of-bounds" balls back into the game! (It's hard enough to get a regular ticket around here, much less a VIP pass!)
The "Red Carpet" treatment continued!
I was becoming more and more bold, so I thought about trying to get Academy Awards tickets like the author, but instead I started small... with the Cable Ace Awards. (The real reason was because I wanted to meet the hostess of a certain cable TV show!)
NO PROBLEM! It took me about 2 hours! Not only did I get a free VIP pass... they asked me to be a judge! Me?! A complete NOBODY... a judge!!!!???
Too cool! For a smalltown country boy from Kentucky, all of this was really like a dream! In fact, finding this information was a life-changing experience.
But here's the interesting thing...
The author of "VIP" didn't market his book very well, and he only sold a handful of copies. Now that's good for us, because almost NOBODY knows about this! In other words, this is uncharted, virgin territory. This is the kind of stuff you AREN'T supposed to know!
