If stress on the body continues, more serious conditions can emerge. Chemicals and hormones can impede the immune system and if these are continually being produced by constant stress then this system will eventually falter. The digestive system can be suppressed or digestion suspended by stress, preventing absorption of essential nutrients. The immune system is a hugely complex and extensive system about which there is still considerable mystery, but it's great importance to human health is universally acknowledged. The immune system is not related to specific organs, as are the digestive, circulatory or respiratory systems, but exists throughout the body's cells with a large part of it residing in the gut of the digestive system.
Abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, excessive gas and other digestive disruptions that can be reflected in sleep disturbances, skin eruptions, headaches, loss of concentration, mood swings or just feeling disgusting seem part of a package deal for CFS/FM sufferers. Aside from pain and discomfort we are tired, cranky and possibly depressed!

Schedule time each day to relax; a necessity for CFS/FM sufferers, and an imperative in battling stress. Relaxation can seem unattainable at times, but it is crucial to try and master this important activity. What have you found to be relaxing before (and not requiring too much energy now you have CFS/FM)? Are there new possibilities you would like to attempt or study? Has a friend/ family member/colleague found something really helpful? What does the local library have in its collection about relaxation techniques? Look for something that appeals, and do not discount losing yourself in a good book or listening to music that lifts you up and away.
Astragalus is a Chinese herb that has been used for centuries and recently been more widely recognised outside the Asian communities as an excellent tonic for the immune system. A qualified herbalist or naturopath may recommend a mix of herbs that contribute to the effectiveness of the astragalus root, so if you are feeling that your immune system is weakened or you are continually contracting infections seek out a reliable herbal practitioner. Astragalus is also a good support to the liver. Intolerances, which are not as serious or frightening as allergies, are far more likely to be the cause of reactions. Food intolerance occurs where the body reacts to a substance but the immune system is not involved as it is with an allergic reaction. Intolerances are more common than allergies.
If you feel tired, a little light-headed, overheated or go blotchy after eating then you are likely to be reacting to what you have eaten. More severe intolerance may be indicated by palpitations or shaking. Symptoms can take up to 12 hours to emerge with fatigue and digestive disturbances likely to be the last to appear to indicate your body's displeasure!
