Dear Teachers and Parents,
Understanding how to write well is hard for kids, but only if they don't have a system to follow.
My name is Paul Barger and I have taught writing for the last twelve years in both elementary and middle school. I have finally perfected a system that I guarantee any teacher, homeschooling parent, or concerned parent can use to bring about true writing success for their elementary school students, quickly and easily.
I have outlined the system below. Please take a serious look at it. It is a complete writing program that takes students sequentially and incrementally from unorganized sentences to complete essays. It does this naturally, effectively, and in a way that makes sense to elementary students. (The system is also highly effective for middle school students as a remedial resource.)
Grammar vs. Writing
First off, this is not a grammar program. Grammar is VERY important, and I do not neglect teaching it. However, grammar and worksheets have never brought about the "writing" success that I wanted for my students. "Writing" is the organization, expression and communication of ideas. "Writing" is what students take pride in.
Once students can EASILY write correctly structured essays and reports, the daily school work in all subjects becomes much easier for them. Students take more pride in their work, because they know it's good work. Confident writers are usually confident students.
Why is Developing Writing Confidence and Writing Control in Elementary School So Important?
If you go to my "Elementary Writing Success Blog" along with a variety of articles you will find a video on teaching essays. What is surprising is that this video is from Ashworth University and is designed for high school students.
It is an excellent video, however what it points out is that elementary writing errors soon become middle school writing errors, and then high school writing errors. These misunderstandings and misconceptions about organization and structure don't get any easier to teach after elementary school. In fact, they often become harder to teach because students have practiced writing the wrong way for so long, and they become very set in their bad habits.
With the "Pattern Based Writing: Quick & Easy Essay System" there is no need for the these elementary writing errors to become middle school writing errors, let alone high school writing errors.
With more homework and increased writing expectations, many middle school students become overwhelmed with their school work. It does not have to be this way!
YOU CAN QUICKLY Eliminate These Elementary Writing Errors and Poor Writing Habits? (while your students are STILL in elementary school) - Students fail to answer the essay question or don't follow the directions. They are off topic.
- Students don't understand what a true introduction or conclusion is.
- Students believe "paragraph form" means you simply start a new paragraph every 3-5 sentences.
- Students repeat ideas or paragraphs. The more they write, the more they repeat.
- Students' prewriting turns into an "art project." This prevents them from finishing, and sometimes even starting the assignment.
- Students write whatever pops into their minds. The more they write, the more they ramble.
- Students focus on many, many tiny details that go on and on whenever they are writing more than a paragraph or two.
- Students find it difficult to connect their prewriting to their writing.
- Students use inconsistent form within an essay. (Sometimes a paragraph is about one main idea, sometimes it's about many.)
- Students use inconsistent structure from essay to essay. (Sometimes they write correctly, sometimes they don't.)
- Students don't have a system for getting their work started, and for getting the work finished.
Creating the Practical Writing Skills That Students Need to Be Successful Students
Not only will you eliminate problems, but you will CREATE the SKILLS that will put your students in complete control and mastery over the paragraph, how paragraphs fit together within the essay, and the relationship between paragraphs and the introduction and conclusion. Your students will be able to organize and compose an entire multi-paragraph essay in less than 30 minutes that will be so good no one will believe it is a first draft!
The system is simple, the concepts are not. They are the same concepts that elementary teachers spend much of the school year teaching. Sad but true, they are also the same concepts that many middle school students and teachers still continue to struggle with!
Let's Look at the System That Transforms Elementary Students into Confident Authors!
Even though it is simple and sequential, individual students have individual needs. I have made sure that when you are teaching "Quick & Easy Essay Writing" you will never be left without a resource. There are over 147 pages of: - Student worksheets
- Explicit diagrams
- Step-by-step examples
- Detailed instruction
Each step of the method is either a "pattern," or "system." The reality is that much of what we teach (and learn) is either a pattern, or a system of sorts. We definitely would not teach children to compose music without a strong emphasis on pattern, and I have found that teaching writing is not all that much different.
Patterns in writing make sense to elementary students. They let them know that there is a rhyme and a reason to excellent writing. Good writing is not random. When elementary students understand this, there is improved confidence that they will be successful at writing.
(Students often feel defensive when their writing is corrected or evaluated. Some even feel as if they are being picked on. They feel that the evaluation of their writing is being handed down arbitrarily. Teaching writing with this system eliminates that.)
The patterns and systems flow sequentially building understanding, skill, and fluency. There is a built in method of evaluation that allows both teachers and students to objectively evaluate student progress.
The System Outlined for You
Some of what you will see is traditional, and some are true breakthroughs. That being said, even many of the traditional aspects have been updated and brought into the 21st century with various pattern theories found only in some of the most advanced levels of linguistics.
Looking over this outline, you might think that I have given away a few of the secrets that make this program so effective. However, it should be noted that what is not included below is the 147-page "student guide/ workbook" that makes this step-by-step system as easy to teach as A, B, C! More... |
