Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was one of the great characters of the 19th century, distinguished in numerous fields. An adventurer, veteran traveller, linguist, soldier, freethinker, hedonist, diplomat, he defies categorisation.
Burton spoke more than two dozen languages, a skill which often allowed him to travel incognito in potentially hostile lands. He served with the East India Company, and was later commissioned by the Royal Geographical Society to travel in northern and eastern Africa - from which travels the current work derives.
Burton's interests in Oriental philosophy, religion, mysticism - and eroticism, led to a series of controversial publications, covertly issued and sometimes suppressed during his lifetime. His most famous translations of eastern texts include the Arabian Nights and the Kama Sutra.
