All of The Most Incredible Changes Began Back in 1978, Which Were Really Out of The Ordinary and Not Remotely Even Close to The Path Most People Take...
We may have different ways of life and upbringing but you're probably just like me when it comes to interests in athletic activities. It may range from rock climbing to scuba diving to kayaking to rappelling. Aside from those athletic and sports interests, there were also remarkable experiences and some attained knowledge that molded us into our current passion (obsession), working out.
But with a few exceptions. I started out the typical story as an ordinary small guy who dreamed of being into sports. I had a few interesting natural talents, too. I could run fast and climb well. I tried different sports like track, football and wrestling but was so small...... they even made an 88 lb. class for me fresh man year! That was tough. Even more challenging was when we played afterschool pick up games, no one wanted to pick me for any team sport. And the only reason left for the team captain to pick me, if I did get picked, was because I was the odd man left over. Anyways, it really never bothered me. Instead, I diverted my interests into other challenges. Like a lot of other inner city street kids, I became involved in a little street gang activities. In my mind it was just like playing. Throwing rocks at cop cars and then getting chased by the cops for excitement. Minor petty crimes, all in the name of pursuing some "fun", became a way to chase life to the edge.
My life during these formative years (age eight to eighteen) became complicated because of a lot of stupid choices. Then the game in the neighborhood became monotonous and law eventually caught up with most of the crew I hung out with. Some went to youth authority camps, some were sent straight to prisons, a few of them died. I was the "lucky" one and I had some retail sales jobs which allowed me to escape the "night life" and manage a couple of years without challenges with the law. At 16, everyone gets their driver's license and the usual carousing starts. The entire crew of guy's I run with all have muscle cars like Chevelle SS, Camaro SS, Challengers and all are ridiculously fast cars. We hit local race spots and cruise around getting in more beefs with the law. Then hang out at night clubs drinking ourselves silly until closing down the club on most nights of the week.
Then Something Strange Happened After One of Our "Saturday Night Fever" All Night, After Hours Parties From Hell, I Finally Made the Best Decision in My Entire Life, Joining the U.S. Navy.
In 1980 at age 20, I left my Little Milwaukee fish bowl, after joining the US Navy and headed to boot camp in Florida. Those times in the Navy were the best thing I ever decided to do. Eating, sleeping, training and growing up in the Navy while being stationed aboard an amphibious assault aircraft carrier, the USS Peleliu. I continued an acquired interest in weight training while stationed there. It was almost 9 years of military training and a variety of assignments including; ship swimming, pilot rescue, SAR school, and an assignment as a candidate for the US NAVY SEAL teams. During the training I became the fitness specialist for my command, same time Ensign David Robinson (All Navy and Pro Basketball star) was aboard.
For Three West Pac tours while stationed on the U.S.S. Peleliu LHA-5, a naval amphibious attack ship with Marine and Navy Special Warfare operators, we trained everyday......
even with the war in Beirut off our bow. We still managed to train total body workouts with all types of training involving body weight, free weights along with some machines and various shipboard apparatus. Selling fitness wasn't a challenge for military personnel, it was standard issue. The gym was equipped with some free weight and machines like the old multi station Universal systems. Not to smooth or really designed to fit the human body. And there were a few guys that didn't really use the weights. They kept to themselves doing this routine of calisthenics that seemed to be way beyond the basic gym class stuff. So one day I ask one of these "quite" type guys "what's the deal, what kind of training is that for?"
With a Steely Eyed Look in His Extremely Chiseled Face He Says "These Hired Guns Are Part of S.E.A.L Team 1 Out of San Diego, ComNavSurPac, Comphibron 7" he says and...
goes on to tell me about his unit and what the U.S. NAVY S.E.A.L Teams are all about. My ears perk up regarding the part when he says; "we pretty much get paid to workout and train, day and night" then he invites me to train with him and his boys. Now I don't want to look lame so I stick with it... six month's straight... zero to hero! We become friends and then hit the Philippine Islands for some play time. We all go to a bar called Filmore East, a special forces hang out with all Marines and Navy personnel and the local talent. Guess what happened next? Huge fight breaks out over a girl and......
The Shore Patrol Comes Crashing in And Starts Busting Heads, Drags us Out for Being Bad Boys....but the S.E.A.L Team Guys Had a Little Extra Juice......
In the military, the Special Forces community is kind of like the rock star or rap star of the armed forces. Every regular military guy respects you and all your peers know you've got what it takes when the chips are down. When we got shuttled back to the command, the command master chief... who happened to be the master chief of the Navy and wasn't about to take any crap... until he saw who was coming up the gang plank to the quarterdeck. "Oh, he says, it's you guys... how many were there? 10 on 5, my boy says. "Boats!" (Short for boatswains mate) what are you doing? "I", starting to say... then my buddy chimes in and says "he's with us master-chief." (How cool is that, 20 years old, training and partying with S.E.A.L.'s and I got a little juice.) Master Chief says "Oh, with a raised eyebrow, carry on!" I hit the rack (bed) still hammered and still get up at 0430 for PT with my first "personal trainers".
Needless to say that was the spark that ignited the insane fire still raging today in my soul about training! It was a tiny smoldering ember as a kid I guess....but that pivotal point in my life started a raging inferno that age 48 still is as hot as it was back then.........I'll die training! For 3 years, non stop I trained onboard ship underway and import. During down time and holidays, I trained waiting to get my orders to be accepted to B.U.D.S. After a lot of serious "brown nosing" I get the nod from the command my assignment comes for TAD orders to Coronado California, Naval Special Warfare Training for the most incredible experience of my life. And while in port, I headed to the civilian gyms. Again, it was o.k. Basic equipment with a little more to offer. It seemed that people liked stuff like push ups and pull ups with calisthenics mixed in. I still wanted more!
When I decided to leave the military service, I suddenly felt strange because I really had no idea what I could do for a job as a civilian. I tried selling men's clothes at a local mall downtown with my retail sales skills. I also had my other job at a residential real estate company and a small fully equipped Nautilus Gym. I made use of the fitness training knowledge and abilities I acquired from the Navy integrating basic commando workouts with my programs. The owner probably noticed it, asked me to demonstrate to the customers how to use my exercises with "new" high tech equipment and I would be paid half of twenty-five dollars. I handled more than twenty clients within a couple of months.
But in 1990, this personal training job at Bodyworks gym ended when I heard of a new gym in town. At this time lot of big box gyms came into area, LA fitness, Holiday health spa (now Bally's) 24 hour fitness and Gold's gym. All full service clubs with lots of free weight, machines, cardio equipment and personal trainer's on staff.
Gold's was my choice. A body builder's play ground and filled with attitude. Working out among some of the areas best national level body builders was a dream come true. Eat, train, sleep and train clients. What a life! I'm Gonna be a pro body builder! Yeah right! I built a lot of muscle, but not enough to compete with the roid heads. On to the next fork in the road, now what do I do? About this time at Gold's this "old" dude rolls in. He's friend with one of the owners and he's got skills. Not a big guy but he has a silver tongue and real smooth with words. Every time you spoke to him you felt just great about yourself after you walked away! His name is Sam Calhoun, the guru of personal training. I later find out about his story and how he worked with the greats like Vic Tanny and Jack Lalanne in Venice Beach California. Everyday Sam occasionally sits and watches the other trainer's do there thing and just shakes his head in disbelief at what he sees them doing on equipment. One day he comes over to me after I just finish working with some clients using some of my commando exercises, feeling great after another great session and Sam says......
"Variety is The Key to Unlock Your Total Body Development and People Want New and Exciting Exercise All the Time" he says! "Why don't You Teach Those Naked Commando Exercises in a Class Here at The Gym?

- What Kind of results can I expect after my first 30 days of Naked Commando?
You can expect to lose 4 - 12 lbs of body fat (not just scale weight), looser clothes, more energy, increased strength &endurance, increased range of motion, a better posture, firmer muscles, cardiovascular improvement, etc. Performance improvement can take place in as little as three days. "Visual Improvement" can take from two to four weeks depending on your level of effort. Remember: Everybody's body is unique.
- What if I cannot participate in certain exercises (jumping jacks, running, push ups, etc.)?
That's a great question and a valid concern. This is the number one reason we conduct a private Health &Fitness Assessment to determine your current physical condition &challenges. Also, during any class if you experience any discomfort for any reason stop immediately and call email me your question. We can make suggestions on a replacement movement or modification. Generally, once the exercise is demonstrated the instructor will be monitoring each participant's ability and make any modifications to the exercise including changing it completely. - What does each Naked Commando system workout entail?
They are different every time. They are combination of many different types' of combinations. One class may be upper body mainly &yoga. The next class may be lower body &core strengthening or whole body, performed in a non stop action with one exercise movement to the next.

- How often do I do Naked Commando?
That is entirely up to you. However, for optimal results we recommend 3 - 4 times per week. I've been known personally for a daily workout that may be upper one day alternated with lower body the next and repeated. Get at least one day's rest per week minimum.

Remember, we're California's only Year Round outdoor Fitness Boot CAMP so we are not as dependent on the weather conditions! Because the exercises are so simple and no equipment is needed, you can find any small area of a room or office indoors to complete when challenged with weather.
- Are you going to yell at us if we call or write in with questions regarding not getting any results? No, only when it's needed, a helpful encouraging reminder will be given to move you in the right direction and to the next level. We're not like other systems, we treat all of our participants with the utmost respect and with that respect "lip service" won't help....but the results you get will.
- How long do sessions last?
As long as your level of fitness allows and the time you have available. Much can be achieved in as little as 15 minutes while 45-60 minutes is more than most need based on the intensity of the workout
- What equipment do I need?
All you need is a mat, water and a towel.
- If this is all I ever do, will it be enough to keep me fit?
It will be more than enough and will keep you from injuring yourself in the gym which will allow you to train for the rest of your life.
