You Need A Strong Foundation

My background was simple. I was an engineer. Reasonable career, but boring.

I just knew there was something better. I'd read about making a living online and thought that working from home, setting things up (the right way) and making money automatically as a result would be ideal - that fitted the model that I had in mind.

But I wouldn't say I was cautious - more like thorough (I suppose my engineering background came into play here).

I knew I wanted to know how this was all done but I wanted to do it right. Yes, I'd been to several "seminars" and read a lot of ebooks which was good for the overall picture but nothing gave me the "do it like this, then do this" approach.

So I decided to research who was already doing this and doing it right. Because that's what I wanted. Nothing piecemeal.

From my engineering days I knew you can't discover everything all at once. In fact, in the beginning I had to serve an apprenticeship and learn from masters of their trade. That took years.

So I reckoned it was about the same with this Internet stuff. Except that there were no places to go to serve an apprenticeship. no recognized colleges that after 4 years you came away with a degree in Internet marketing.

You Need A Step-By-Step Approach

You cannot possibly hope to "get it" all at once. You may have heard the term "information overload" or "overwhelmed" or even have felt that way yourself at times. I know I used to. These terms are nothing new. But being overwhelmed is nothing more than trying to do things all at once. And of course, it can't be done.

You have to take a step-by-step approach.

Only when you have mastered one step do you proceed with the next.

I know this sounds too obvious to be true but I can promise you that the mindset of the majority of people is not that way. They seem to want to be able to run before they walk. And that's understandable, but not very practical.

Back in the Internet "Wild West" when the top search engines were Webcrawler, Excite and Alta Vista, you could get listed in the top ten by stuffing your keywords into your web pages.

Back then (the 1990s) if you searched for a certain phrase, you may have had to scroll down quite a way to find what you were looking for.

Then along came Google.

The search engines are a lot wiser now. Keyword density has little effect and if you search for a certain phrase, the chances are you will find it straight away. In fact, you don't hardly ever see Webcrawler, Excite or Alta Vista any more.

Search engines are getting cleverer and cleverer.

People search the Internet for information.
