Years ago, my wife and I barely made enough money to pay for rent, food and electricity. As broke as we were, we got a credit card offer! What a relief I thought!

When we ended up buying groceries with the credit card I knew we needed a change, so we hooked up with a youth camp. You know, those places where you send your kids for the summer?

Rent was cheap and the camp food was free, which, if you've ever had camp food, is about the only thing going for it!

After a few years of spending more than we made and collecting LOTS of school loans, we had dug quite a deep hole for ourselves. After I finished school, we walked away with nearly $80,000 in debt! Yikes! We were in trouble.

Stressed out to the max, I looked all over for a debt solution to help get out of it. I tried budgeting tool after budgeting tool. Maybe you've tried some. From work books to software, none of them did anything for me. They were too dang complicated!

Finally, I'd had enough. "We're getting out of debt!" I demanded to no one in particular. From that point on and over the course of about 3 years, I set out to develop a system for our family that would help us escape the trap we were in.

Give rewards and incentives for going into debt and add value to making small payments over a long period of time.

Bottom line? They want to reward you for going into debt.

The key is to give you lots of "rewards" so that you'll be a HAPPY and faithful card user. The problem is of course that the faithful are enslaved!

You know what that's called? Bribery!

So how do they implement this strategy? There are 2 ways, psychological and physical.

• Bribery Step #1) Psychological - make you feel like you are a special recipient of a unique benefit that only a limited few get the privilege of participating in.

What, you think I'm kidding? Check out your junk mail and see what I mean. The marketing departments of these companies just love to talk you up like you are the greatest (and of course you are because you make them rich!).

Here are some actual words from a SINGLE advertisement that I received from one of the world's largest credit card companies:

Words used included, "wisely," "smart," "savings," "confidence," "reduce," "simplify," "rely," "trusted," and "advantage."

Hey, it gets even better. That same ad contained the following phrase:

"Consolidate Balances With a Company You Can Trust."

Listen, there is not a single "smart" "advantage" about going into debt no matter how "nice" or convincing the ad is. Once you zero in on this one truth (that they are not looking out for your best interest), you can rocket your way to freedom!

• Bribery Step #2) Physical - this strategy is to offer some kind of physical reward, both for signing up and for remaining a faithful customer.

John Hayes, chief marketing officer for American Express was quoted in American Banker saying that, "We want our cardmembers to feel rewarded with membership, and we want prospects to say, 'Boy, I should get one of those'"

Through special perks and incentives, companies are making an extra effort at making you, the card user, feel valued and special. This not only gives you a reason to sign up, but also a reason to stay. The truth is, people want to feel catered to and they want to be listened to.

Credit card companies are listening.

American Express alone spent $1.6 billion in advertising, in just the third quarter of 2006 alone! Now I'm not picking on AE, just using them as an example. All the other credit companies are just the same and don't let them tell you otherwise.

Whether it's air miles or discounts to your favorite restaurant, these are nothing but gimmicks to keep you attached that plastic ball and chain.

NEVER FORGET, you are paying for these gimmicks with each payment you make in the form of interest.

You know what I say?
