WORRIED? CONCERNED? SCARED? OVERWHELMED?
THERE IS NO TIME TO LOSE!
THIS GUIDE FOR NEW PARENTS
Dear Friend,
If you or a family member has a newborn (or is about to) that's been diagnosed with Down syndrome, then please read this letter as if the child's life depends on it...because it very well might.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Sharon Casey Bruneau. I've worked with adult individuals diagnosed with Down syndrome for the last 11 years. I'm not a doctor, but a Qualified Mental Retardation Professional (QMRP) and someone who cares passionately about people who have special needs. I want to do everything possible to help the families of newborns diagnosed with Down syndrome because every day I see the sad situation of the adults I work with who grew up without the proper care.
Unfortunately, many of the adults I work with did not receive the proper care or treatment. Years ago parents were unsure, sucked in by society, being told their child was not good enough to be a part of society, part of the community. It's sad and a tragedy that in the early years of these people's lives they never ever had a chance to develop skills for every day life. They did not have the proper therapy, never learned skills to live a productive life, or have the proper environment (some in institutions) to learn and grow.
With today's information, resources and technology summarized in this guide your child has a real chance to grow, develop and lead a fulfilling life. You can povide a great future for your child by understanding what is involved!
You have the responsiblity to yourself and your child to begin within the first year to learn what you can about this diagnosis...rest assured there is information available in this e-book, not only about your baby's diagnosis but for you also as a new parent trying to cope with this surprising situation.
To assist you, I created this resource to help you and/or all families of newborns with Down syndrome to give their child the best possible care, support and assistance so your child can develop to his or her full potential (plus relieve some of your concerns). This resource addresses the issues that not only your child faces but what you as a parent will experience.
Here's how this book will help you:
- Understanding the diagnosis of Down syndrome. It's one thing to have a baby and receive the well-meaning - but often incorrect support or advice from others, but when your baby is diagnosed with Down syndrome, people find it a monumental task to learn everything they need to know and feel comfortable. By understanding what Down syndrome is, its causes and characteristics you will be prepared to face different issues that will arise as you raise your baby.
- Developmental Milestones: Find out the developmental milestones that babies diagnosed with Down syndrome have difficulty meeting. You'll know what to expect, how to help your baby speed up their development, as well as parenting tips for caring for your new baby during these first critical months.
- Discover positioning tricks for breastfeeding or bottle feeding babies diagnosed with Down syndrome. Many people feel that they are fighting their newborn every step of the way, almost like they have to force feed their baby. That doesn't have to be the case when you understand how to work with your baby's natural body instincts.
- Understanding the sleeping patterns specific to babies diagnosed with Down syndrome. When you discover how to maximize your babies rest, your baby will sleep better and be calmer and healthier.
- Discover the best six ways to stimulate your baby's mental development. Babies diagnosed with Down syndrome have a slower developmental rate. However, learning the best six ways to stimulate your baby will assist him/her in achieving a greater range of development the first year that will put your baby ahead of the game.
- You'll also learn potential difficulties that can occur, and warning signs you should be aware of-as well as things you can do to help prevent problems. Babies diagnosed with Down syndrome may have special medical issues. To avoid becoming overwhelmed with the medical attention your baby might need, you'll find out the causes and nature of your baby's medical conditions (the basics) so you'll be able to respond in a nurturing and timely fashion.
- The best home environment-getting ready: Everyone struggles with the way a baby diagnosed with Down syndrome should be raised and the structure of the environment. People even begin to argue and fight over this issue. This doesn't have to be. The best strategies, interactions and structure are explained to ease your mind and to get family, relatives, and friends, etc. to work together to foster the best home environment for the baby.
- Early Intervention - What is it? What do you need to know? This is an area that needs to happen in order for your child to achieve maximum progress. Therapies explained to assist you in becomming prepared for your child's early years.
- Taking care of your baby - As a new parent relieve some of your stress - learn about umbilical cord care, hiccups, diapers, diaper rash, fever, bathing, cradle cap, skin care, temperature control, crying, etc. etc. etc.
- Emotional changes: these are often overlooked or minimized, but I address them carefully. After all, this is a time when emotional support and caring guidance is most critical as you deal with the tremendous life task changes that occur.
