Notice that the word covenant is singular, not plural. Taken literally this means God has a single eternal covenant which was established by Him prior to creation. Starting with Adam He has progressively revealed this covenant to Noah, Abraham, David and others. Eternal or everlasting means this covenant is still in effect today.
This book is primarily developed from a Biblical theology perspective, but is influenced by the Covenant theology emphasis of single covenant. Biblical theology uses a Christ centered hermeneutic which interprets all of Scripture through the lens of Jesus. Said another way, Biblical theology uses the hermeneutic of the Emmaus road. On the Emmaus road Jesus starts with Moses and the Prophets (Old Testament) and explains that all of Scripture points to Himself2.
God's covenant relationship with man started with Adam and culminates in Christ. The culmination of the covenant by Christ's crucifixion was planned by God before the world was created. The Bible states that this was kept a mystery, because if man knew they would not have crucified Jesus.
Due to God's unchanging nature all of God's covenant revelations are progressive, cumulative and eternal. God is unchanging and all knowing, and He will never revoke or change them. Each revelation builds on the previous one and ultimately is fulfilled in Christ. Jesus said that He came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it.
God's desired relationship with man, which is defined by His eternal covenant is not revealed in one single Scripture reference, but is progressively revealed as a composite of revelations. Understanding our covenant relationship with God is foundational in building our faith. God's eternal covenant was planned before creation and initiated with the first Adam and completed in the second Adam (Christ). It is still in effect and will be completely fulfilled when Jesus comes again for His bride, the church. This will initiate His final step of His eternal covenant relationship. This final event is revealed in the book of Revelation.
God has determined the terms of this covenant. He is the superior party. The covenant is for His glory. Man has no input into the terms and conditions. There is no negotiating. God's covenant is binding to all humans past, present, and future. Since creation, every person has lived under the same covenant relationship with God.
