Have you attempted to lose weight and failed....or did the weight come back? The most likely cause is the type of program that you followed.
You know how others focus on a single concept when offering advice about losing weight? Some will tell you to eat less, others will tell you to eat more nutritiously, others will tell you to exercise more, ...you get the idea. Well here's what I do differently.
My background is in nursing, with a specialty in psychiatric nursing. Because of that I know that there is much more to losing weight than simply focusing on a diet, or a single focus on exercise, or any other single focus for that matter. What I encourage is a holistic approach!
What do I mean by that? By taking a holistic approach several things will be taken into consideration.
About the holistic approach
For most people the weight problem they face does not stem from over-eating alone, but rather, the problem goes much deeper than that. Certainly one issue is eating serving portions that are much too large, but some of the other issues related to eating practices alone include the fact that we make poor choices about the food we eat, we often eat at the wrong times - such as a late evening meal or late night snack and we tend to forget that beverages need to be calculated in our caloric intake as well as the food.
Well, it still goes much deeper than that. We must consider exercise, since that is basically the only way to burn excess calories. In addition to watching the food intake and increasing the activity level one should consider how and why this condition started. The emotional attachments that we have to food is a hurdle that must be overcome. Both emotional and physical issues will need to be addressed if the program is going to be effective.
Some will simply say that the overweight person eats too much and exercises too little. This issue cannot be treated so nonchalantly. Each case is different because as individuals we are all different.
Are these people really eating too much or is there a medical issue that needs to be addressed? Before any weight loss attempts are made a visit to the family doctor is in order. You should always rule out medical causes and insure that the increased physical activity is appropriate. Doctors can also assist in developing or choosing a healthy diet choice.
Another issue that needs to be considered is the actual cause of over-eating and under activity. Many people eat out of boredom or due to stress or anxiety. The boredom, stress and/or anxiety should be addressed.
In taking all of these things into consideration, the "whole" person is being evaluated - not just the weight issue. This is the holistic approach to losing weight and the only way that weight loss should be attempted. If the root problems are not addressed during the weight loss program, there will usually be little or no weight loss and the weight will come back. It is essential that the root cause of the problem be addressed.
So you just want the shortcuts to losing weight...
I challenge you to consider yourself or anyone that you know that has been fighting the weight battle over time and seems to have little or no success.
