I didn't even know negative thinking was destroying my life until I made the biggest financial mistake of my life.
My earliest memories of having negative thoughts are the Summer before 6th grade. For a month before school started, I remember my mother "reminding" me that the school system was creating an experimental class that would combine some students from the 4th, 5th and 6th grade classes together. My mom informed me that she was praying every night that I would not be selected for that class.
Why? I asked.
My mother explained that I would not be able to be with my friends. I would lose all contact with my friends. I would not get a good education because the teachers would only help the younger children etc.
Well the day the new class assignments were posted on the wall, I remember driving my bicycle over to the school. I don't know why, but I always remember how hot it was that day in 1979. I was in pure panic mode when I walked up to the class assignment sheet on the school wall and found out I was "sentenced" to the new experimental class. My life was over.
It took all my energy to be able to walk down the hall and out the door toward my Schwinn 10 speed bicycle. On my way out the door, I bumped into the principal of the school, Mr. Kelly. Mr. Kelly asked me why I was so down. I told him because my school year was ruined by being placed in the new class. Mr. Kelly asked me to come to his office; which I did. When we sat down in the office I almost started to cry; which was rare for me. Mr. Kelly came over to me and placed his hand on my shoulder and explained to me why he and my 5th grade teacher recommended I be put in the new combined grade class. Mr. Kelly told me that he felt that I was a leader. He also explained that being placed in the class was an honor. Also, he let me know that our class would be doing many extra activities that other classes wouldn't be doing and how I would still be going to recess, art and music class with my friends from the 6th grade class.
When I rode home I was on top of the world!
That was soon to change.
When I walked in my house (my mom worked nights) and told my mother what class I was in she screamed. I mean a hysterical scream with the words "Oh My God, No!" Then she reiterated all of the negative scenarios to me again until I was convinced that I was doomed. I believed my mother because I trusted her very much. By the way, I still love my mother very much and I have actually turned her into a positive thinker!! I went upstairs to my room on that beautiful Summer day. I lay in bed all day dreading the start of school. My Mother was calling every relative and friend she could find to tell them about the BAD news! I could hear the bad news unfolding downstairs, call after call after call. I was terrified to go to school!
6th grade turned out to be a great year! But for some reason, I never turned that lesson into a great positive learning lesson. To this day, I wish I would have listened to Mr. Kelly and his great outlook on life!
For the majority of my teenage years I was fairly successful in many activities but I can't believe now how much my negative thoughts blocked my true potential. Some examples are below:
Sports - I was a good baseball player but before every game I would think about how I would probably strike out or let a ball go between my legs. I actually would almost get physically sick before every game because of my negative thoughts.
Personal Relationships - Many of my relationships ended because I was convinced that they "were too good to be true", or this wouldn't work or that wouldn't work etc.
Career - Or How I Lost 3 Millions Dollars!
I was very fortunate to be on a very fast career track. I was promoted 4 times in 10 years and was a Vice President, in a division of a multi-billion dollar company. I eventually quit and started my own company because I was convinced that we were going to be put out of business by foreign competition or were going to go bankrupt etc. The person who replaced me ended up making over 3 millions dollars when the company merged with another company (18 months after I left) and is currently the President of the new company!!!
Actually, that last sentence is the reason I decided to finally try to develop a positive attitude! I thought why am I spending my life focusing on negative thoughts. Why do I let that negative little voice in my head continue to ruin my life? That negative little voice cost me millions of dollars and I was sick to death of spending my life: depressed, worried, scared and waiting for the bad news to hit!
When you wake up in the morning and all throughout the day you only have 2 ways to think:
1.) Positive OR 2.) Negative
You will never be: - Successful
- Happy
- In Great Health
- A Good Spouse
- A Good Parent
- Worry Free
- OR The Person You Want to Be
Unless you develop a positive attitude. Period.
I don't want to scare you, but it is true. I found out the hard way and I don't want you to have to lose something big in your life before you understand. I want you to understand RIGHT NOW that if you suffer from a negative outlook on life, please take the time to read this page, it could change your life.
I want you to know that I understand how you feel. I had struggled with a negative outlook and negative thinking my whole life. I figured this was just the way life was going to be. I was wrong! You can overcome your negative attitude. If I can, anyone can! And yes, it has changed my life! In fact incredibly!

When I received the news that I would have been a millionaire if I would have stayed at my job I took a long weekend to really evaluate what was going wrong with my life decisions and to find out who I really wanted to be in life. I had read many "inspirational" "self help" books but they all seemed to be phony pep talks with the only advice being "You can do it if you really want to". The problem was that we all read books like that and feel good when we are done and put the book back on the shelf and go on with our lives - being negative.
But when I took that long weekend I decided to try to change my thought patterns one last time.
I realized that I had blocked every chance for opportunity in my life because of my negative thinking.
I knew I had to figure out a better way to change my negative thoughts. My "Eureka" moment came when I thought; I have trained my brain to think this way. Why can't I train my brain to think positive? So I started buying all the self help books again and even visited a psychiatrist and therapist for 6 months and guess what... .drum roll please... .nothing worked!
I knew I had to understand my thought processes better.
Please note, I did not say BEAT this negative thought process. You will never beat that negative voice in your head until you understand the reason for your negative thoughts and what a life of positive thoughts can be like. As I explain in the manual, all the "pep talk" techniques will not help you get to the root cause of why your brain always thinks negative thoughts.
I soon learned that the "self help authors", psychiatrists and therapists were all very well educated honest people but they couldn't help me because they didn't suffer from negative thought patterns and couldn't understand what it was really like "inside my head".
Additionally, these professionals presented so many techniques to "try" that it was difficult to figure out what methods were best. That is when I made the decision to research all of the scientific data and studies I could find on positive thinking. My hypothesis was that certain methods and techniques had to work better than others.
I didn't study theories and theoretical techniques. I studied only actual research studies and proven statistics to create the Don't Knock On Wood positive thinking manual. I have a background in research, so I think this motivated me to find the real answers to changing my negative attitude for good!
