Would you like to be a more effective advocate for your child with special needs?"
As parents we all want the same things . . .
- - To be there for all of our children.
- - To make sure our kids are accepted for the unique individuals they are.
- - To make sure each child gets the most effective education possible.
- - To do all we can to support the lifelong success of our children.
But how do you get the knowledge and skills to be that "ultimate parent/advocate"?
Well, you have several options:
Option 1: Trial & Error:
This is the tried and true approach of some parents. You simply figure it out, the best you can, as you go along. Unfortunately there are two major disadvantages to this approach.
#1 - It takes time to get it right. This lost time is valuable learning time in the life of your child that simply can't be re-captured and replayed once you figure things out.
#2 - It guarantees mistakes and failure. No one is perfect and unfortunately the one who will be hurt by the failed approaches and mistakes is the LAST person you would ever want to harm -- your child. Are you willing to risk that?
Option 2: Trust the Experts:
Many parents go this route. They simply trust that the professionals working with their child will have the know-how, committment, and compassion to do what's best -- even when it's difficult, expensive or inconvenient.
In an ideal world this would be a great plan. . . . but in the real world of budget crunches, staff shortages, and inadequate training it's often a recipe for disaster. So ask yourself: Which world do you live in?
Option 3: Empower Yourself:
This option requires more work on your part, but it also solves many of the problems of the first two approaches.
- - A knowledgable parent will make fewer mistakes and be well-prepared to protect the child they love.
- - An empowered advocate will be able to draw on the expertise of others without relinguishing their right to guide and participate in the process.
Birth of an Advocate is a series of interactive workbooks that can help you become both Knowledgable and Empowered.
Birth of an Advocate is unique in that:
It's self paced. You can absorb facts and apply new skills at a pace that is comfortable for you. It's parent-friendly. Each workbook breaks information down into "bite size" chunks that are easy to process and absorb -- even in the midst of your busy schedule. It's practical. The tips, resources, and ideas included are all focused on "real life" practicality. Theory is nice, but results are nicer! It takes a "hands on" approach. Every segment includes a "hands on" exercise to help you apply what you're learning about to your personal situation. It's crammed with solid resources. Each workbook is filled with hundreds of resources that you can turn to again and again whenever you need to brush up on a particular topic.
