"Do you want to get your hands on the Secret Recipe book of America's first Celebrity Bartender? "
Hi,
When I first came across Jerry Thomas' little book (last published 1887) in a dusty old book shop I was blown away.
Here at last was cocktail history laid bare! I bought it on the spot and literally sat up all night and read the book cover to cover.
For anyone with even a flicker of interest in cocktails and drinks its an enthralling read. Jerry Thomas is to cocktail culture what Louis Armstrong is to Jazz!
Here at last, set down on paper, were some of the very first cocktail recipes ever recorded. It was amazing, but it wasn't just cocktails, the book contained a host of other recipes, for "Punch, Egg Nogs, Juleps, Smashs, Cobblers, Mulls, Sangarees, Toddies, Slings, Sours, Flips, Negus, Shrubs, Pousse Café, Cups" and many, many more.
In total there were some 230+ original recipes. Some were famous, some I'd never even heard of! They represented an amazing cross-section of exciting and wonderful drinks.
I am pretty sure of one thing and that's 99% of bartenders have no idea how to make these drinks anymore. Thomas's book was grandly entitled "THE BAR-TENDER'S GUIDE OR HOW TO MIX DRINKS". It's been out of print for nearly a 120 years and the secrets of the recipes have been mostly forgotten or changed out of all recognition.
Should these legendary recipes be kept under wraps, unknown, unloved? Of course not! They deserved to be well known by a new generation of bartenders and cocktail drinkers. People like you in fact, people who'll appreciate making, serving and drinking them once again!
Original copies of the book are very hard to find. My own copy cost me a considerable amount of money.
But don't despair! You can now affordably own all these forgotten recipes for yourself. I have produced an almost exact reproduction of the book in electronic PDF format.
What secrets does the book contain?
Well as the title page puts it, the book "Contains Clear and Reliable Directions for Mixing all the Beverages Used in the United States, Together with The Most Popular British, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish Recipes, Embracing Punches, Juleps, Cobblers, etc In Endless Variety".
These are the original drinks that bartenders would have served over a hundred years ago.
That's before commercial mixes, before nasty plastic glassware, before bodyshots, slammers, and naff pick-up lines!
But there's far more to the book than that. For starters Thomas has an amazing 25 point "Hints and rules for Bartenders" list. This goes into fascinating detail on:-
How to keep the customers happy, Handling Ice, How to correctly strain and ornament a drink with fruit, Preparing Hot drinks in the right way, Preparing Cold drinks in the right way, How to add sugar to Spirits, the correct way, Cooling sparkling wines, Preparing Milk Punch and Egg Nogg, How to prepare Punch, Treatment of Champagne, How to keep Lager, And many, many more topics.... Some other recipes in the book include
