Who Am I And Why Should You Listen To Me?
I've been bowhunting mature whitetails and turkeys for 30 years in one of the highest hunting pressured states - Michigan.
When I started taking my daughters bowhunting when they were 12 years old, I knew that they were going to need to see a good number of deer if they were going to enjoy the sport. Most kids (and even some adults) need instant gratification.
Even though I don't use bait when hunting by myself, I started throwing out some corn, apples, and sugar beets near my daughter's blinds with little success.
Here's why.
- Extra trips in and out of the woods to leave bait and unfortunately your scent.
- In Michigan, deer are very cautious with bait piles, especially mature bucks.
- It takes a lot of extra time, effort, and money to keep multiple bait piles going.
- Deer tend to feed on bait piles after dark leaving hunters wondering where all the deer are.
All this chasing around buying and hauling bait into the woods so we would see more deer only to get skunked most of the time was getting a little old. Hunting is supposed to be fun. Does this sound familiar? Are you frustrated with not seeing your share of deer in the fall? Do the deer always seem to be on your neighbor's property?
I Knew There Had To Be a Better Way... I kept reading articles in magazines and seeing videos of hunters with food plots who always seem to be seeing and taking nice bucks. That's exactly what I wanted for my daughters and me.
- No more buying and hauling bait, saving me a lot of time and money.
- Bigger and better quality bucks with good nutrition most of the year.
- Deer would feel more comfortable in a food plot than over bait piles.
- In many states baiting is not allowed. Most recently in Michigan.
If I could just have my own food plot, that would solve a lot of problems we had been experiencing. I could setup a ground blind several yards from the plot, brush it in with branches to help it blend in and that would allow me to easily videotape my daughter's bow hunts. She could stay warm and dry and hunt more hours over the course of the season. This would really go a long way toward insuring that she would love bowhunting.
I Thought Food Plots Were Too Hard To Plant...
I grew up in the city playing sports so what did I know about creating crops for wildlife? I wasn't familiar with any of the terminology and thought it was out of reach for me because:
- I thought you needed equipment for tilling and soil preparation
- I assumed it would cost way too much money
- I thought I needed a big piece of property for a food plot
- I assumed I would need to plant every year
So instead I would always buy the latest and greatest deer lure scents, calls, scent eliminating clothes, broadheads, etc. All that stuff is great but it didn't help to attract and hold deer long term where we hunted. I knew that if we hunted the same way every year hoping for the best, we would end up with the same results. Something had to change.
I realized a food plot was possible... After I heard a food plot expert on the radio explain the necessary steps involved. The next day I decided to call him on the phone and pick his brain. He was nice enough to explain how to get started, how to choose a good location, when to get started, what tools I needed, where to buy fertilizer and seed, and exactly what to plant for the time of the fall we would be hunting.
The next spring I started doing exactly what he said and by hunting season we had the greenest little "hot spot" we had ever hunted. We had deer in that food plot every time we hunted it that fall, sometimes even turkeys. My daughter took her first deer with a bow at the age of 14 after passing on quite a few small bucks. With all the deer we were seeing, she was in no hurry.
I can't tell you how much enjoyment I got out of hunting that plot with my daughter. It was our little 1/8 acre "honey hole." The next year I wanted to take it to another level by planting a bigger variety of plants. I was hooked on creating food plots. It is a riot. Hunting season has never been so much fun. You never know what deer you're going to see next. I should have been doing this a long time ago!
I don't tell many people where my food plots are. But the few I have told are pretty envious and wish they had one. That's when I thought about taking everything I learned and experienced and create a how-to-book for the average hunter without a lot of property to have his own small food plot using no power equipment like I did up to large pieces of property strategically laid out to attract and hold more deer.

This Information Will Also Help You To:
- Gain permission to hunt on private property. Some landowners who may not have any reason to give you permission to hunt on their land will like the idea of your offer to plant a small food plot with no power equipment on their property so they will have more opportunities to see deer out and about their land or in the back of their field in exchange for allowing you to bowhunt that food plot during the rut.
- Observe more deer interact with each other in a more natural situation rather than being on high alert at a bait pile. This will also encourage mature bucks to feel it is safe to join them.
- Learn what kind of deer you have in your area by using a digital trail camera very discreetly. This will help you pattern any mature bucks so you can setup and plan a true ambush, especially for opening day.
- Create multiple small plots with No Power equipment not only on your land but on other properties you have permission to hunt already. Do you have a secluded spot on state land you like. Check with your DNR's regulations. Imagine rotating your hunts with several small food plots that never get "overhunted" and giving you the advantage with any wind direction.
I think you can start to see the incredible advantages of having a few small easy-to-create food plots. Your biggest challenge may be trying to keep them a secret. You will find your self wanting to tell your friends and other hunters just how many deer you see and pass up. Guess what they're first question will be......where do you hunt?
Stop Throwing Money At The Wrong Solutions
You could go out and spend hundreds of dollars on new equipment, the latest hunting gimmicks & gadgets but none these will put deer in front of you on a regular basis.
Now, you have to ask yourself, is it worth 5 cents a day to learn all that you'll ever need to know about attracting and harvesting deer in multiple ambush food plots? You bet it is! Stop spending your money on the latest and greatest doe-in-heat scents, calls, mineral licks, etc hoping that next year they'll really work.
Many hunters spend hundreds of dollars on the latest bows, broadheads, and other equipment. I know. I was one of them. Since then I've learned that all the best equipment never put a relaxed deer feeding in front of me. Let your buddies spend the big dollars on that stuff while you spend your $17 wisely on what really works year after year.
