As the time designated for the birth of Christ approaches, I am glad you are searching for ways to put aside the influence of the world and focus on the gifts of the Spirit. Although I've always been a Christian, at times it was difficult to not get caught up in the more commercial aspect of the season. As hard as I fought to focus on our Savior's birth, I still felt compelled to provide the appropriate gifts for friends and family. When our children were young, I used Christmas as an opportunity to focus more on their "needs" than their "wants," but with the advertising tactics all around us, our children always believed they "needed" every new product available. Now they have families of their own and face the same struggles.
Words of our bishop each December for the past few years ring in my ears: "Years from now your children won't remember what gift you bought them for Christmas. What they will remember is the time you spent with them."
The same goes for friends. Some may be afraid to suggest foregoing gifts for the fear of appearing cheap or stingy, but I think you'll find that they will be glad you were the one to suggest it.
